Maintaining progress
Points to bear in mind to help you maintain progress are:
- You need to progress at the right pace for you. This is different for each person. The level of anxiety should never be more than you feel is manageable.
- Work on only one goal at a time.
- Always work on the least anxiety-giving situation/step until you feel reasonably comfortable with it. Then move on to the next situation/step as appropriate.
- You have been taught a wide selection of tactics. Not every one will be useful in every situation. You need to plan which tactics you are going to use for each situation.
- The involvement of a friend or family member is usually most useful in the early stages, when an escort may be necessary. Later, they can continue to give encouragement and support. But do not forget you are working towards being independent.
- There will be bad days and setbacks. Maintaining progress means being committed and giving your programme high priority.
- Practising the exercises regularly.
- Learning from setbacks.
