World Mental Health Day 2011

To mark World Mental Health Day (10 October 2011), Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is encouraging everyone to pick up a copy of its new booklet. The fourth in the series of recovery stories – ‘Pathways: Journeys of hope from Cornwall and the Scillies’ is designed to raise awareness of mental health and tackle stigma.

World Mental Health Day is a great opportunity for everyone to take the time to find out a bit more about mental health issues and the help available.

Tim Carthew, Social Inclusion Worker co-ordinated production of the Foundation Trust's booklet.

"On World Mental Health Day we're encouraging everyone to pick up a copy of the 'Pathways' booklet and improve their understanding of mental health by reading someone's personal journey.

"Even though one in four people will experience mental health problems, there is still a lot of misunderstanding and stigma. Often people are afraid to talk about their illness or friends and family don't like to ask. Because of this, friendships can be lost, people feel isolated and sometimes don't ask for the help they need. The more we all talk about and are aware of mental illness, the better for everyone."

Each of the stories and poems included in the book has been written by someone with personal experience of mental illness. Everyone who shared their story did so in the hope it would help, educate or inspire someone else.

Copies of the free booklet will be available from the Trust's premises and other key locations across Cornwall.
